INDIVIDUAL BADLANDS
LINKS TO THE 9 SAN JUAN BASIN BADLANDS HOME PAGES WITH INFORMATION ON THEIR LOCATION AND GEOLOGY, INCLUDING PHOTO TOURS
EACH OF THE 9 INDIVIUAL BADLANDS LINKS LEADS TO A HOME PAGE THAT CONTAINS:
1) a GEOLOGIC TABLE;
2) a brief description of the badland;
3) driving directions;
4) a link to a photo tour;
5) and a link to in depth text on the badland based on articles of mine that have appeared in New Mexico Magazine and other publications over the past several years.
THE GEOLOGIC TABLE
For each specific layer or formation found in each badland the GEOLOGIC TABLE contains the following:
Formation Name: the name of the formation
Rock Type(s): the specific sedimentary rock types that compose the layer
Geologic Time Period: the name of the geologic period or era the formation was deposited during
Time of Deposition (millions of years ago): the beginning and ending “dates” in geologic time during which the formation was deposited
Depositional Environment: the types of ancient environments and ecosystems that existed when the formation’s sediments were deposited
Common Fossils Found: general information regarding the kinds of fossils found in the layer
Link to Blakely Site: link to the site of Robert Blakely, a geology professor at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, which shows an appropriate map of North America during the geologic time spans when each formation was deposited.
EXAMPLE GEOLOGIC TABLE FOR THE MORRISON FORMATION FOUND IN THE OJITO WILDERNESS:
Formation Name: MORRISON
Rock Type(s): Sandstone, Siltstone, Shale
Geologic Time Period: LATE JURASSIC
Deposition Times (millions of years ago): 150 to 144
Depositional Environment: rivers, flood plains, lakes, wetlands
Common Fossils Found: Petrified wood, Sauropod dinosaurs (herbivores): Allosaur dinosaurs (carnivores)
